Life of Unemployed Part 3 - The 90 Day Mark

It is officially the 99TH Day that I have been unemployed. Should I pat myself on the back?  No-no.

You can read about my first 30 days and 60 days to get caught up.

Employed Day Number 1? and Number 2?

Now, let’s rewind back 30 days.  That would make it my first day at the mysterious unnamed company.

Day 1: The first day was alright. The office was super quiet. People seemed so distant, and all I can hear was the screeching of every chair that turned. The person that was supposed to train me was not here today.  So I sat all by myself.  Without a laptop or computer.  Just an empty desk until late afternoon.  They finally gave me a Dell laptop.  I was reading the company website for hours.

How much actual information could I get from looking at a company website for 3 to 4 hours. How frustrating is that?

Day 2: Okay, so it’s the second day.  Trainer was here, but this time came unprepared.  Left me again with nothing to do but to read the company website.  I now have a catalog of all the products.

The boss decides to be warming and kind.  She takes a candid photo of me, sort of, because I did look towards the camera.  She sends it to everyone.  I hear laughs.  I realize that my hair was incredibly messy and I had this really awkward smile.  Then a colleague of mine asks me if I saw the picture.

She was like, “it’s so embarrassing, how could so and so send that?”

I saw the photo, and thought exactly the same.

In a way I felt humiliated. I mean it was just a picture, but I felt like she didn’t even care about what my feelings were. It seemed like she was trying to be welcoming, but instead it only drove me to want to quit.

It might sound stupid that I did, but the reason was that I was embarrassed.  Although it was something so little and insignificant, if she can treat me that way, then how could I ever trust working with her, again.

Plus the location of the company was about 36 miles back and forth, which was one of the main reasons why I quit the previous company.  This company seemed way too unorganized for me. Did not want to go through another Mama Drama company again where everyone tells me their personal life stories.

Looking forward, I quit and started my quest again to look for new jobs.

Inspired to Do What I Love

Flower Arrangement

One day the thought of flowers popped into my head.  And for 2 weeks straight, I tried to look for classes and courses on flower arranging, particularly Ikebana.

Found a couple of teachers, through a school located in Japan, that teaches publicly and privately within my area.  Took a couple of days, driving to each florist by my house. Thanks Yelp!  And handed in my resume.

Result: One interview and a couple of them would call me for Valentine’s day because that is the time they usually need extra hands.  Most of them are not hiring, because this industry alone is mainly for family members of 2nd, 3rd generations, etc…

I love flowers.  It would have been so nice to work in with flower.  To be surrounded by beautiful things all day long.  Imagine, if I really get good at this?  I could have my own shop and deliver them through a website (which my hubby could design for me.)  Arranging flowers for weddings. How exciting would that be! I could really get good at this! Ikebana arangements are simply beautiful.

Anyway time calls for me to WAKE UP!  The owner of the flower shop from one interview said I was too qualified to be a secretary there.  And my hands were too nice.  I would end up getting so many scratches from all the thorns on the flower.  That really didn’t bother me and I would love an opportunity no matter what.

However, did not receive any calls after that call.  So that ended my quest to look for a job in the flower industry. Move on to the next!

Back to the Drawing Board, Getting Motivated

Quote by Henry Ford

So far, I’ve been able to arrange about 2 interviews per week, which is pretty good. At this rate, I should be getting an offer letter anytime. NOT!

I have been looking and it seems that for most of the positions I have my experience in or qualified for… the salary is much less than my previous one.  Why should I settle for less?

In the mean time, I have been reading articles on productivity and time management. I finished reading ” How to Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. This is a fascinating book for people that want to become entrepreneurs. This helped motivate me, after feeling down for quitting so fast, when I should have given it a chance for at least a month.  This book is definitely a must read.

It helps you dream big, and that a 9-5 job isn’t all you can do.  There are many endless opportunities out there. You just have to go for it.  Equipped with the specialized knowledge and accumulated skills.  Anyway in the meantime, I am reading ” The Help” by Kathryn Stockett as well, which depicts the life of  a black maid back in the Civil War era to distract me a bit, so I don’t get too stressed out about looking for jobs.

Attacking the Job Boards Relentlessly

Office Forward - attacking job boards and sites.

From my experience so far in these 90 days, I am loving Craigslist and the Chinese Newspaper” World Journal” as a resource for job classifieds.

Monster and Indeed have listing and opportunities but it’s for really huge companies, that at least a million people are after.  And unless you’re the friend of  Ivanka Trump, you have a fat chance to get it.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

The Los Angeles Times Sunday Edition is a must too.  Although, there isn’t too much of a difference, I still get it though.

I went on a second interview for a Sprint B2B Sales Position and I just emailed them that I would like at least $xxxxxx amount.  So now, no replies back. Should you ever write the amount you expect? Anyway for this week, I am sending out cover letters, with the minimum amount I would like to get. If this doesn’t work, or I don’t receive any calls back, I will have to change my ways again.

I really hope I get something  that is a PURRfect fit for me. I don’t want to miss out on any opportunties. On the brighter side, there are more and more listings, so MORE opportunities for me. Anyway if you are unemployed and searching for an Amazing Opportunity, I wish you the BEST OF LUCK.

And my hunt continues….

Pray pray and pray some more. Time to make lunch for my hubby and I.

Will keep you updated.
