Life of the Unemployed (Part I) – The First 30 Days

Posted on by pinkytoes83

Life of the Unemployed is a series of articles written to reflect and share the experience of being unemployed for the first time.  This fascinating account of leaving an ordinary job to find one’s true calling.

Life of Unemployed Part 1

So it all started after the 23rd of October of 2009, when I first quit my job. I hoped to get laid off first. Unfortunately it did not work out for me that way. Now, it’s been 98 days and every day seems to be tougher and tougher. So let me describe how my first 30 days have been.

The Beginning of My Journey

I wake up early at 7:00 am and make my usual morning coffee. I original kicked the habit of smoking for two full months after my birthday.  This was was back at the end of August . The reason why I mention cigarettes is because usually right after my morning coffee, I have a craving for it.

After my morning coffee, I log onto Facebook. How distracting is that? Just to update my status for the day,  browse for any new photos friends uploaded, and read on about others .  I can’t help it, I’m curious all the time, and really do miss social interaction with others, since most of the time I am with my hubby.

We’ve had our house for about a year or so now, so going out too much would hurt us financially. For the week that I had quit, I already booked a ticket to Taiwan for vacation.  A whole one month long trip!  So all I could think of was “Taiwan, here I come!”

Organizing Myself and Resume

resume writing as unemployed

For the remainder of the days until vacation time, I would work on my resume.  From editing to making it look as professional as it can be because I’ve had about 5 years experience.  This is how my resume looks:

  • Graduated with a BA in Management of Information Systems
  • Taught English to Kindergarten Students-18 months
  • Sales/Marketing Associate-8 months AR/AP- 7 months
  • Order Management Specialist-16 months.

How bad could this be? My resume resembled that of an entry level person.  Ironically, which in a way I still am.

None of my professions were related to MIS, and each position I had after graduation, did not relate to one another.  What was I to do?

I’ve been hopping from one profession to another. How would anyone hire me this way? Why would anyone take me seriously?

I had way too many questions on my mind, and no actual solution for any of them. The next BEST move would be to just FIX my resume to my ultimate best. I’ve made mistakes, and I’m still learning.

Praying to God, I will find a company that will accept me the way I am, and grant me a life experience that I will never forget!

An Opportunity is Presented

So an acquaintance of a high school friend of mine calls and tells me they are hiring internally, and I totally fit the description.  This is a huge company, and everything went pretty smooth during the interview. The boss tells me to call her after I come back from my trip. Next, all packed and ready for my trip. No thoughts of work until I come back!

But right before I leave, I write that boss a thank you letter and that I will keep in touch with her, so she doesn’t forget me.

After the First 30 Days

To summarize, here is how I spent my first 30 days unemployed:

  • Facebook (2-3 hours a day)
  • Vacation Planning ( 4 hours total)
  • Taiwan (30 days)
  • Interview (1 day)
  • Job Hunting ( 1 week)

Which means it is time for me to get down and serious.  I will not go anywhere with my future like this.

Keep telling  myself not to give up and this is an awakening for me.

Work work work. How many more cigarettes can I smoke for me to realize that I am heading to a path I do not want to be in?  It is all about Time Management and Productivity for me from now on.
